The
Gardens and Grounds - The
Surrounding Area
The Surrounding
Area
With over
thirty acres of garden and twelve hundred acres of estate you could be forgiven
for not wanting to go further; but travel you must. Broxwood Court is ideally
placed in the heart of The Marches - the borderland between England and Wales
- to allow you to explore. Herefordshire is one of the most rural counties in
the country. Built on farming and famous for both cattle and cider the network
of country lanes lead to villages that have changes little over the centuries.
The 'Black and White Village Trail' takes in some of the finest including Pembridge,
Eardisland, Dilwyn and Weobley. Each with it's own character and all with Medieval
and Tudor buildings, pubs, shops, galleries and restaurants.

Offas Dyke
walk
Within a
short drive are a number of market towns. Over the years they have all developed
in different ways. Leominster has become a centre for antiques, Ludlow boasts
the largest number of Michelin Starred restaurants outside London, Hay on Wye
is the second hand book capital of Europe as well as hosting the international
literary festival while Kington has become a walking centre and also home to
the small breeds animal centre.

Ludlow Feathers
For the
keen gardener there are the gardens at Hergest Croft, Burford House, Abbey Dore,
Bryans Ground, Arrow Cottage, How Caple and Westonbury Mill to name but a few.
The area
is steeped in history, from the Neolithic Burial ground (Arthur's Stone), through
the many 'moats and mounds' to the churches and vernacular architecture that
is still being explored. Archaeological digs are taking place in the Arrow Valley
during 2003 and already iron age and roman pottery has been found. In Pembridge
projects involving the dendro (tree ring) dating of buildings, exploration of
the moat and mound behind the Church and renovation of the market hall are all
ongoing.
Croft Castle,
Berrington Hall and Burton Court are close by whilst further afield there are
the sights of Powis Castle with it's Clive of India exhibition, the Brecon Beacons'
and Elan Valley. Hereford is the nearest city with it's Cathedral, Mappa Mundi
exhibition, shopping centre, leisure centre and swimming pool.
